McCoy and Sulu cast in final season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

December 23, 2025 by Ricky Church

The USS Enterprise is ready to beam aboard the final Original Series crew members in the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Joining the cast is Thomas Jane (The Expanse) as Dr. Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy and Kai Murakami in his TV debut as Hikaru Sulu.

Neither character has yet appeared in Strange New Worlds as the series has followed the previous crew of the Enterprise under the captaincy of Christopher Pike. Only Spock and Uhura, played in the series by Ethan Peck and Celia Rose Gooding, from Star Trek: The Original Series have been consistent main characters among Pike’s crew, but the series has introduced more of the original characters to prepare for Pike’s accident and James T. Kirk taking charge with Paul Wesley starring as Kirk and Martin Quinn as Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott.

It is unknown how many episodes Jane and Murakami will feature in the final season, but they are reported to at least be in the series finale as the timeline gets closer to Kirk being named captain of the Federation’s flagship. McCoy and Sulu were played by DeForest Kelley and George Takei in The Original Series, Star Trek films and other series with Karl Urban and John Cho starring as the characters in the Kelvin Timeline films.

The fifth season of Strange New Worlds wrapped production in Toronto earlier this week ahead of next year’s fourth season. Unlike the previous four seasons, the fifth will only consist of six episodes as opposed to ten.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds features Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, carol Kane, Martin Quinn and Paul Wesley.
