Sinners makes history and breaks records with 2026 Oscar nominations

January 22, 2026 by EJ Moreno

We knew Sinners was a monumental achievement in filmmaking, but now it’s got the Oscar nominations to back that up. But that’s not the only notable moment from the 98th Academy Awards nomination morning.

Covering the last year in film, the Oscars 2026 are giving love to quite a few of the fan favorites of the year, while also snubbing some presumed shoo-ins. One Battle After Another held its own against Sinners and its 16 noms, landing 13 of its own. Chase Infiniti was thought to be a lock for this year’s Best Actress race, but it’s widely considered that Kate Hudson’s nomination for Song Sung Blue nabbed that spot. Another notable miss this year comes from Wicked: For Good, shut out of this year’s nominations after landing 10 just last year; Ariana Grande for Supporting Actress and Best Song, long considered a lock, but nothing materialized.

Back to Sinners, Michael B. Jordan landed the Best Actor nomination many believe he’d get, but actor Delroy Lindo is the biggest surprise of the day as he’s now contending for Best Supporting Actor. Missing from the Supporting Actor race is Hamnet‘s Paul Mescal, who many believe to be the anchor of that film. Hamnet still landed major recognition, as director Chloe Zhao landed a nomination, and Jesse Buckley is still likely to take home Best Actress on the big night.

K-Pop Demon Hunters continues its race to Best Animated Feature, but without Wicked in the mix, is it a lock for Best Original Song as well? Only time will tell, but the Academy Awards are just around the corner, so the wait won’t be too long. Check out the full list of nominations below…
