LEGO Marvel Super Heroes – Mighty Micros: Captain America vs. Red Skull (76065) Review

March 21, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Gary Collinson reviews LEGO Marvel Super Heroes – Mighty Micros: Captain America vs. Red Skull…

For the past couple of years, LEGO Star Wars fans have been able to enjoy miniaturized versions of their favourite vehicles from the galaxy far, far away thanks to LEGO’s MicroFighter sets. Well, now those who prefer their superheroes to their spaceships can also get in on the act, with LEGO releasing a range of chibi-style Mighty Micros sets for both LEGO Marvel Super Heroes and LEGO DC Super Heroes.

The new products hit the shelves this month, and here’s my thoughts on one of the Marvel offerings, Mighty Micros: Captain America vs. Red Skull (76065).

As with all of the Mighty Micros sets, Captain America vs. Red Skull consists of two minifigures (I’m sure you can guess who) and two little go-kart-style vehicles – a blue tank for Cap, and some kind of Hydra mobile rocket launcher for the Red Skull. There’s 95 pieces overall (the most of any of this first wave of sets), and a handful of stickers for both the tank and rocket launcher.

‘Cute’ is clearly the name of the game with Mighty Micros, and LEGO has pulled that off very well indeed. The vehicles are small, compact, and rather simple builds, but they certainly look fun once they’re constructed, especially with Cap and the Red Skull at the wheel. If I have one minor complaint here, it’s that the gun turret on Cap’s tank is in a fixed position, and it would have been nice if it had the ability to swivel.

The two minifigures for the arch-enemies ramp up the cuteness and cartoonish level to the max. The faces are really expressive and I’m a big fan of both of the unique torsos (it’s absent from the images here, but the Red Skull’s Hydra logo on his back is superb!). I’d go as far as to say these are my favourite minifig versions of these two particular characters, although I’ll probably swap out the short legs and stick some regular-sized ones on them.

Given the low price point ($9.99 U.S. and £8.99 UK) and the fact that each set comes with two big name characters (and highly-stylized, comical versions at that), LEGO’s Mighty Micros sets are sure to prove popular with kids, adults and collectors alike. They’re fun and affordable, and I’ll definitely be picking up a few more.
