Alicia Silverstone to return as Cher Horowitz in Clueless sequel series

August 1, 2026 by Gary Collinson

Paramount+ has announced that Alicia Silverstone is officially set to reprise the role of it-girl Cher Horowitz as it gives the green light to an event series sequel the cult classic 90s teen comedy Clueless.

“Clueless is coming home,” said Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals for Paramount+. “Thirty-one years ago, Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz captivated audiences with her signature chic style, sharp wit and relentless optimism, helping make Clueless a box office hit and instant pop culture classic. We’re especially proud to be filming this much-anticipated series in Los Angeles, honoring its starring role in the original film while investing in the city’s exceptional talent and crews.”

The logline for the sequel series reads: “Picking up 30 years after the original film, beloved Beverly Hills icon Cher Horowitz has figured out a lot: She’s successful in business and has mastered motherhood—that is, until her daughter’s high school years, and Cher finds that parenting a teenager makes her feel “clueless” all over again.”

The series ie being written and executive produced by Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage (The OC, Gossip Girl) and Jordan Weiss (Freakier Friday, Dollface), while Alicia Silverstone will also executive producer alongside the original film’s writer-director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence.

Released in 1995 and loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma, Clueless followed wealthy Beverly Hills high schooler Cher Horowitz as she navigates teenage life, plays matchmaker for her teachers, and gives a “clueless” new student a popularity makeover. The film spawned a three-season TV series spinoff in 1996, which Silverstone sat out, although she did reprise the role of Cher back in 2023 for a Super Bowl commercial in 2023.

Reports of the sequel series first emerged last year, with streaming service Peacock originally attached, only for the NBCUniversal-owned streamer to pull the plug earlier this year, opening the door for Paramount+. That also followed an earlier attempt from Peacock at developing a mystery-tinged TV series reboot.
