Almost two years after Hasbro Entertainment and Legendary Entertainment announced development on a Magic: The Gathering feature film, Stranger Things alum Maya Hawke has become the first addition to the upcoming adaptation’s ensemble cast.
The film will be based on the popular trading card game that was created in 1993 and has spanned through multiple forms of media including novels, comics and video games. Hasbro and Legendary’s plan will see the franchise become a film series that will also expand into the television landscape.
While details on Hawke’s role and the film’s plot are yet to be revealed, the card game sees players become planeswalkers, a group of mages and spellcasters who use all manner of magic to protect the world and defeat their enemies. The game has expanded into crossovers with other popular franchises including Marvel, Lord of the Rings, Dungeons & Dragons and most recently Star Trek.
Magic: The Gathering will be directed by Matt Johnson (Tony) from a script written by him, Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. Hawke will be seen next in the prequel The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping which comes out on November 18th and Netflix’s upcoming series The God of the Woods.
