George R.R. Martin pitches Tales of Dunk & Egg as a Game of Thrones spinoff

April 20, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Earlier this week, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss dismissed talk of a spinoff to HBO’s epic fantasy series as rumour. However, that didn’t stop EW from seeking out the thoughts of A Song of Ice and Fire creator George R.R. Martin, who feels there is plenty of material should the network decide to go down the spinoff route once Thrones comes to an end.

“There is certainly no lack of material,” Martin told EW. “Every episode of The Naked City – one of the television shows I watched as a kid – ended with a voice-over: ‘There are eight million stories in the naked city. This has been one of them.’ There are eight million stories in Westeros as well … and even more in Essos and the lands beyond. A whole world full of stories, waiting to be told… if indeed HBO is interested.”

“The most natural follow-up would be an adaptation of my Dunk & Egg stories,” said Martin, referring to his prequel novellas, which take place around 90 years before the main series. “Each of the novellas could easily be done as a two-hour stand-alone movie for television; that would probably be the ideal way to do them, rather than as an ongoing weekly series. The Hedge Knight and its sequels are lighter [in tone] than A Song of Ice and Fire, more in the realm of action/adventure.”

Would you like to see Tales of Dunk & Egg adapted for the screen once Game of Thrones is over? Should HBO look to craft original stories set in Martin’s world? Or should it end with the conclusion of Game of Thrones? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
