R.I.P. Prince (1958 – 2016)

April 21, 2016 by Gary Collinson

TMZ has broke the news that legendary musician Prince has died at his home in Minneapolis, aged 57. The superstar had been hospitalised last week after a show in Atlanta due to the flu, but was released and had returned home, where his body was discovered this morning.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson in 1958, the singer-songwriter is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and eclectic performers of his era. He sold over 100 million records in a career that spanned five decades, winning seven Grammy Awards, an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.

On the world of film, Prince made his debut in 1984’s Purple Rain, where he portrayed The Kid, and won the Academy Award for Best Music, Original Song Score, as well as earning a Golden Globe nomination for ‘When Doves Cry’. He would direct and star in a further three films, Under the Cherry Moon, Sign o’ the Times and Graffiti Bridge, as well as contributing to numerous soundtracks, including 1989’s Batman, and Happy Feet, where he received a Golden Globe for Best Original Song – Motion Picture with ‘The Song of the Heart’.
