Sigourney Weaver says Neill Blomkamp’s Alien movie “will be worth the wait”

April 24, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Last year, it was announced that District 9 director Neill Blomkamp would be relaunching the Alien franchise with a fifth instalment that would see Sigourney Weaver back as Ripley – and potentially alongside her Aliens co-star Michael Biehn as Hicks.

The project really seemed to be picking up steam, until Ridley Scott decided to bring his Prometheus sequel more in line with the original Alien, pressing ahead with his plans for the now-titled Alien: Covenant. As a result, Blomkamp’s Alien was put on indefinite hold, but according to Weaver, it’s far from dead and will be “worth the wait”.

“Well, I think it is,” said Weaver when asked at a VMware event if the movie was still happening (via Aggressive Comix). “Ridley asked Neill not to make our Alien ’til after Prometheus 2. [Ridley] wanted his movie to shoot and be released first. But it’s an amazing script, and Neill and I are really excited about doing it. We’re doing other things until we can get going on that. I’d be really surprised if we didn’t do it, because it’s such a great script, and we love working together. So, it’s just going to take a little bit longer to get out to you, but it’ll be worth the wait.”

Of course, with Ridley Scott revealing back in September that he has plans for a further two movies after Alien: Covenant, we may have quite the wait on our hands…
