Among a sea of mediocre reviews [read ours here, here and here], Bryan Singer’s mutant movie X-Men: Apocalypse has not been performing too well in its domestic release. However its international screenings are really helping push the movie further up the success chart.
Now in its second week, X-Men: Apocalypse dropped 66% to $22 million, losing the top spot to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. It now boasts a domestic total of $116 million, with a projected overall total of $160 million – which is what X-Men did back in 2000 and where X-Men: Days of Future Past was in just ten days. Two weeks into its release, and it still isn’t in the domestic top 40 of the highest grossing superhero movies, currently behind Green Lantern and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Thankfully for 20th Century Fox, the international screenings have really helped. It earned an estimated $84 million worldwide over the weekend, $59 million of which came from its first weekend in China where it became the second largest opening for Fox behind the re-release of Titanic. Its international number of $286 million now accounts for 71% of its $402 million total.
However, estimates are saying that the movie should end up at around the $650 million mark, which is $100 million less than X-Men: Days of Future Past and – crucially – $100 million less than Deadpool which cost a fraction of the budget.

Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.
