Sony’s animated Spider-Man movie finds director in Bob Persichetti

June 21, 2016 by Justin Cook

With most of the Spider-Man-related focus is on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, which just began shooting, it’s easy to forget that Sony Pictures Animation is developing a 2018 animated film built around the character that sounds just as promising as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s effort. In fact, Sony has just announced their latest major step forward with the project, as they have found a director in Bob Persichetti.

Although the untitled Spider-Man movie is set to be Persichetti’s directorial debut, he has a ton of experience in animation, having worked on Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens and Puss in Boots. Additionally, he co-wrote the screenplay for The Little Prince, a well-reviewed film coming to Netflix in August.

21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are on a hot streak right now, are signed on to produce the project, alongside Avi Arad and Amy Pascal; Lord pen the script as well.

When the film was first announced many hoped that Lord and Miller would direct, but the duo already has a packed schedule, between directing the Star Wars Anthology Han Solo film for Disney, producing a slew of upcoming Lego movies at Warner Bros. and a load of other projects as well.

The animated Spider-Man movie is set for release on December 21st, 2018.
