Comic Book Review – The Fix #4

July 12, 2016 by Emma Withington

Emma Withington reviews The Fix #4…

Mac’s new partner doesn’t seem to like him very much.

It’s the return of the Mac! I waited a whole month to drop that pun…wait, please don’t leave!

We last saw Mac confronted by his new partner, Pretzels the dog, in The Fix #2 – who took an instant dislike to our crooked friend. Personally, I think the floral shirt has something to do with it. Pretzels the dog is causing a rift within Mac’s ‘romantic’ relationship and Josh returns to provide relationship counselling – for Mac and Pretzels…will it ever work out between them?

This month The Fix #4 takes a break from Roy, who we last saw having a haunting vision of Pretzels telling him to be ‘the big goddamned hero‘, after Elaina’s death at the hands of two, as yet unknown, masked criminals. This month we are provided with the ‘love’ issue, opening with an idealistic montage of Mac’s relationship with his girlfriend – which results in Mac going solo that evening. Mac needs to bond with Pretzels – the most feared officer in the entire Los Angeles police force – if he’s going to involve him in less than legal activities, namely smuggling something through LAX for Josh…

The shifted focus back to Mac makes The Fix #4 the first of the series that doesn’t provide the same level of belly aching laughter and energy as the previous issues. While it is still masterfully written and the timing is impeccable as always, Mac alone is generally less of a thrill ride. That being said the bar Spencer and Lieber have set themselves is astronomically high, so when I say it’s not on par it only really reduces itself to a nine. Humour highlight of the week has to be Josh awaiting Mac in a lift for dramatic effect…

The Fix #4 lacks a part of its charm without Roy, but still comes up roses with lots of laughs, plenty of pretzels, and a striking introduction of an associate of Josh…

Rating: 9/10
