Warner Bros. wants Alfonso Cuarón to helm The Shining prequel The Overlook Hotel

May 23, 2014 by Gavin Logan

Alfonso Cuarón is currently one of the most in demand directors out there right now. It was only a few months ago the Mexican filmmaker was swooping a ton of awards for his groundbreaking space thriller Gravity and more recently he’s been linked heavily with the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Now its looks like Warner Bros. have set their eyes on him for another spin-off – or rather a prequel – to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining entitled The Overlook Hotel.

Schmoes Know are reporting that “two close sources with knowledge of the project” claim that the studio have apparently already offered Cuarón the position and are just waiting on an answer from him. The Overlook Hotel has been rumoured to be in development for a number of years with Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) writing the script. It’s easy to see why the studio are keen to get him in the directors chair. Gravity grossed over $700 million worldwide at the box office and picked up several Oscars including Best Director and his previous directorial effort with the studio Harry Potter and The Prisoner Of Azkaban is widely considered the best of the bunch in a franchise that has eclipsed $7 billion internationally.

Stanley Kubrick’s now legendary adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel – although slated by the author – is still seen as one of the most iconic horror movies of all time and Jack Nicholson’s unforgettable portrayal as Jack Torrance, a struggling writer turned janitor has firmly etched itself in the history books. The Overlook Hotel will be set before the events of Jack’s visit but will look to the original novel for inspiration.
