McG says Masters of the Universe will be his next movie and compares it to Guardians of the Galaxy

August 15, 2016 by admin

After spending an eternity in Development Hell (or should that be, Eternia in Development Hell?), director McG has announced the his Masters of the Universe reboot is finally making some movement.

“It’s a very exciting moment for Masters Of The Universe,” he told IGN. “We have a big meeting with Sony regarding prep of the movie on Wednesday. And we’re in the middle of a bit of a script polish, and it’s my absolute passion. I’m laser-focused on that being my next film. But I mean, you know how it works in contemporary filmmaking. You really, really have to earn the good will of the parent studio, and Tom Rothman runs a tight ship at Sony, and we’re going to get there. I’m so happy to report that to the fans.”

“I think we want to honor the fan base, first and foremost,” he adds. “We also need to be cognizant of the incredible resonance of what Kevin Feige is doing with Marvel, and the balance of full-bodied entertainment. That it’s both credible and emotional, action-packed, and the story of a hero’s journey. It’s the genesis of He-Man, it’s the becoming of He-Man. We want it to be clicking on all cylinders in that regard. We’re not going to stop until we get it right.”

He also confirms that some of the movie (but not all) will be set on Eternia, and Earth will not feature in the movie. He also says that Skeletor will be an actor in make-up and Evil-Lyn will feature in the movie. Interestingly, McG also noted that Battle Cat likely won’t feature in the movie, which would have been a part of the previous live-action reboot.

When asked about the movies tone, he brought up Guardians of the Galaxy.

“I think what James [Gunn] got up to with Guardians was such an overwhelming and pleasant surprise,” he says. “I saw that film by myself in New York City, and, you know, I’d been interested in those characters for a long time, and the cinematic expression of that, and what [Chris] Pratt did to get ready for that role, and the fun they had, and the ability to pull the rug out from under the expectations of the audience. I thought it was outstanding. They’re my favorite movies. I just want to contribute to that with MotU.”
