Shooting has begun on Game of Thrones season 7

September 1, 2016 by Justin Cook

Following their report that Gangs of New York and Brooklyn actor Jim Broadbent will be joining the Game of Thrones cast in a key role, Entertainment Weekly has now confirmed that production has officially begun on the seventh season of the hit HBO show.

Filming actually commenced on Monday in Northern Ireland, one of the show’s primary shooting locations, but over the next few months, production will be taking the cast and crew to Spain and Iceland as well.

Instead of a usual March or April release date, the penultimate season will premiere sometime during the summer of 2016; it will consist of seven episodes, rather than the ten fans have come to expect.

Most of the characters who survived the events of season six will be returning, including Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and more.

Game of Thrones veterans Alan Taylor, Jeremy Podeswa and Mark Mylod and newcomer Matt Shakman have been hired to helm the season’s episodes.
