The Week in Star Wars – New Rogue One trailer, poster and reactions, Obi-Wan movie, new ongoing comic series and more

October 16, 2016 by Luke Owen

Originally published October 16, 2016. Updated November 30, 2022.

In your weekend edition of The Week in Star Wars, we’ve got a brand new trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (and a new poster), some more talk about an Obi-Wan movie and more…

Let’s be honest, we’re going to kick off with the new trailer Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, aren’t we? After announcing a new one was coming (along with a brand new poster), the trailer landed online to much fanfare [watch it here]. It’s pretty great, right? Well if you’re interested, you can read the thoughts of the Flickering Myth writing staff here…

…Based on the trailer, our own James Garcia came up with a new theory about Mads Mikkelsen’s character in the movie, which you can read here…

…Following the release of the trailer, YouTube channel Science vs. Cinema put together a supercut of all the Rogue One footage released so far [watch it here], while Topps released six promotional trading cards, offering up a look at two Rebel pilots, Mon Calamari, the aliens Moroff, Edrio and Benthic Two Tubes, and three Jedha pilgrims [see here]…

…Rogue One director Gareth Edwards was asked about the theory linking Alistair Petrie’s Rebel leader spotted alongside Mon Mothma in the trailers to Star Wars Rebels‘ Agent Kallus, confirming that they are in fact two separate characters: “His name’s General Draven,” states Edwards. “It’s no official secret. Sometimes I read stuff online like it’s this big thing that’s been leaked, and I thought, ‘Oh, I thought people knew that…’”

…You may recall some reports a while back about reshoots for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that delayed the project somewhat (so much the film lost its composer). Well, its star Felicity Jones was asked about this in an interview and she said, “Obviously when you come to the edit, you see the film come together and you think, ‘actually, we could do this better, and this would make more sense if we did this. I’ve done it so many times. I mean, you wouldn’t just give your first draft on this story, would you?”

…Disney announced their new line of Big Sleeves Editions for some of their titles including Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Guardians of the Galaxy, Aladdin, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and Finding Dory. They’re really nice to be fair…

…It seems like every few months this story crops up, but Ewan McGregor was again asked about the possibility of returning to the Star Wars Universe as Obi-Wan Kenobi. “I’ve always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness’ first one,” he said. “It would be fun to film that story now I’m older. I’d be the right age. I’m forty-five, Alec Guinness was what, sixty? I could do two of them (laughs)! I hope that they’re going to explore different genres under the Star Wars banner. And one of those could be an Obi-Wan Kenobi feature film. Or two! The Obi-Wan Kenobi Story Part 1 and Part 2!” We’ll see if this ever comes to pass…

…Hot Toys has released promotional images for its 1/6th scale Stormtrooper collectible figure from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story [which you can see here] and their the Stormtrooper Jedha Patrol (TK-14057) collectible figure [which you can see here]…

…Over to Star Wars Rebels now and you can watch the Rebels Recon featurette for episode three here, and a clip from Episode 4 here…

…You can read Ricky Church’s review of Star Wars: Ahsoka novel here, and his review of Star Wars: Darth Vader #25 here…

…Last month it was revealed that Marvel is replacing Star Wars: Darth Vader with a “classified” ongoing series, and now the publisher announced that it will see Doctor Aphra taking centre stage in Star Wars: Doctor Aphra as Kieron Gillen (Darth Vader) and Kev Walker (Marvel Zombies) team up for the first Star Wars series headlined by an original comic book character [see a first-look preview here]. Following her time in the clutches of Darth Vader, Doctor Aphra has barely escaped with her life. If he ever learns of her survival, he’ll hunt her to the ends of the galaxy. But for now, it’s time for a return to what she does best. With the droids 0-0-0 and BT-1 in tow, she’s off in search of rare artifacts from the galactic center to the Outer Rim and everywhere in between. Aphra’s got debts to pay after all. Just as long as she can stay one step ahead of the Empire, some Bounty Hunters and just about everyone else in the galaxy!

That’s all for this week – may the Force be with you.
