UPDATE: The Dark Tower movie pushed back to summer 2017

November 3, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Fans of Stephen King’s fantasy epic are going to have to wait a little longer to see The Dark Tower on the big screen, as Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the film is being pushed back from its original release date of February 17th to the summer of 2017.

According to the site, Sony Pictures and production company MRC had set an overly ambitious timeframe for post-production, and need more time to complete the visual effects, as well as marketing the movie. This makes sense, seeing as we’ve seen very little in the way of promotional material so far, save for some official images, and a leaked trailer which featured temporary and incomplete VFX.

The Dark Tower is being produced on a relatively modest budget of just $60 million, and Sony was faced with the choice of spending millions more to speed up post-production, or push back the release.

UPDATE: Sony has now announced a new release date of July 28th 2017. This was occupied by Jumanji, which has again been pushed back to December 22nd.

The Dark Tower is being directed by Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) and stars Idris Elba (Luther) as Roland Deschain, Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar) as the Man in Black, Tom Taylor (Doctor Foster) as Jake Chambers, Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road) as Tirana, Fran Kranz (The Cabin in the Woods) as Pimli, Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) as Richard Sayre, Michael Barbieri (Little Men) as Timmy, Claudia Kim (Avengers: Age of Ultron) as Arra Champignon and Katheryn Winnick (Vikings) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
