Han Solo Star Wars Anthology movie will be like a Western, says Kathleen Kennedy

November 22, 2016 by Ricky Church

As more information is steadily being revealed about the Han Solo spin-off, Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy has been discussing the type of genre Han Solo will take its influence from. Where Rogue One will be akin to a World War II movie, the spin-off of everyone’s favourite smuggler will feel like a Western film.

Speaking to Variety, Kennedy said “This moves closer to a heist or western type feel. We’ve talked about Frederic Remington and those primary colors that are used in his paintings defining the look and feel of the film.”

Frederic Remington was an American artist who specialized in depictions of the Old West. Given that Han spent his time prior to A New Hope as a morally grey smuggler working primarily for Jabba the Hutt on Tatooine, it isn’t exactly surprising that his film might have a Western influence. For a look at one of Remington’s paintings to get a sense of the colours Kennedy mentioned, check out this image…

The Han Solo film stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and Emilia Clark in as-yet-unrevealed role. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are directing for a May 25th, 2018 release date.
