Comic Book Review – Chew #42

June 25, 2014 by Jessie Robertson

Jessie Robertson reviews Chew #42…

“CHICKEN TENDERS,” Part Two No animals were hurt during the making of this comic.

SAMMI THE SEAL WAS MURDERED!

That’s the mystery in this issue of Chew, but in very Chew-esque fashion, it does not unfold how most mysteries do. Tony is sent on a mission to a top secret facility to investigate who killed Sammi and why. He’s doned a ridiculous disguise looking like a young Albert Einstein but is introduced to 4 scientist on Level E who could be the culprits. How he cracks the case is so damn funny and in your face I was left wondering why I thought this would turn into a much longer tale than it does.

We get to spy in on John’s post-wedding celebration where he is not even allowed to invite Tony and find out in a flash-forward (to issue #60) that Applebee does unequivocally hate Chu and always will.

This issue was shorter than most but had the same sardonic artwork and layout that I’m most attracted to with this book. We see Savoy, Old Yeller’s tombstone and see a dolphin talk as well. And there’s news in the back of the issue that Chew is being made into an animated film, based off the first trade, which is awesome news as well.

Shorter than most, but another fun issue and nice to see Tony not eat something so putrid I skip lunch again.
