Daredevil composer John Paesano signs on to Pacific Rim: Uprising

January 18, 2017 by Justin Cook

John Paesano, the composer responsible for bringing music to Hell’s Kitchen on Netflix’s Daredevil, is set to provide the score for Legendary Pictures’ Pacific Rim: Uprising, the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim.

While in most situations Paesano’s name being attached to a project would be met with plenty of positive reactions, his involvement with Uprising indicates that Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones, Westworld) won’t be returning to compose, which may upset a few fans. Djawadi’s score for the 2013 science fiction monster movie managed to set it apart from similar genre titles and helped give the film attitude; the combination of epic orchestral instrumentals and electric guitar proved to be an unlikely but happy marriage.

That’s not to say, of course, that Paesano isn’t more than capable of tackling the project. While his work on Daredevil is more understated than the kind of music one would expect from a massive, explosive action film such as Uprising, look no further than 2015’s Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials to get a taste of what he might be bringing to the project.

While it’s possible that scheduling conflicts led Djawadi away from the project, as he is a busy man, it’s also hard to ignore the fact that Daredevil season 1 showrunner Steven S. DeKnight is helming the sequel and may have wanted to reunite with his previous collaborator.

Pacific Rim: Uprising is set for release on February 23rd, 2018, with DeKnight directing a cast that includes John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Adria Arjona (True Detective), Scott Eastwood (Suicide Squad), Cailee Spaeny (Counting to 1,000), Levi Meaden (Aftermath), Karan Brar (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Nick Tarabay (Spartacus), Zhang Jin (Ip Man 3), Mackenyu (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) and Jing Tian (Police Story: Lockdown). Additionally, reports have suggested that Pacific Rim actors Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman will be reprising their roles for the film.
