Benedict Cumberbatch wants director Scott Derrickson to return for Doctor Strange 2

February 25, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Marvel may be a little too busy to start thinking about Doctor Strange 2 just yet, but we’ll be seeing plenty of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr. Stephen Strange in Phase Three, with the Sorcerer Supreme set to appear in November’s Thor: Ragnarok, along with next year’s Avengers: Infinity War. Nevertheless, given the box office success of the first movie, it’s inevitable that we will get a second sequel, and speaking to Cinema Blend, Cumberbatch has revealed that he hopes to see Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson back at the helm.

“Scott’s got, he’s very good on process, and he’s very good on visuals and he had to cram a lot in,” said Cumberbatch. “I mean this was a much harder shoot in many ways than I imagine some of the other origin stories had been. They’re all hard, not to detract from the hard work that they put in, but my point is that there was a massively fast turn around. So he was having to edit and approve special effects shots at the same time as setting up these huge sequences live and getting the camera and angles and performances and visuals right on the day. So he was double tasking in a pretty full on way and then he was, for someone who’s done stuff to do stuff with the supernatural before but never, as he’d be the first to admit I’m sure, never quite on this scale. He had to do it all with great skill and the results are on the screen. So yeah I think this film speaks to why Scott would be a great choice to direct it again.”

And Derrickson has some good news for Cumberbatch, as he’s “absolutely” up for a return – which isn’t too much of a surprise given that he’s already spoken about story possibilities last month:

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

Doctor Strange sees Scott Derrickson (Sinister) directing a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) as Stephen Strange, Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer) as The Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as Baron Mordo, Benedict Wong (The Martian) as Wong, Rachel McAdams (True Detective) as Christine Palmer, Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal) as Kaecilius, Benjamin Bratt (The Infiltrator) as Jonathan Pangborn and Scott Adkins (Ninja: Shadow of a Tear) as Lucian.
