SPOILERS: Hugh Jackman talks about the ending of Logan

March 5, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Warning. If the title didn’t give it away, there are major spoilers for Logan in this post. If you don’t want to know the ending, turn back now…

This past week saw Hugh Jackman bringing the curtain down on 17 years of portraying the fan-favourite mutant Wolverine with the release of the James Mangold-directed solo outing Logan.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Jackman has been talking about the decision to end the film with the death of the beloved X-Man, as Logan sacrifices himself to protect Laura/X-23 and her mutant friends from the Wolverine clone X-24.

“I thought, ‘This is a reason to do another movie and a reason to do no more after it,’ but we really needed to earn it,” said Jackman, after revealing that it was James Mangold who suggested they end with the death of Wolverine. “Logan is someone who is most scared of intimacy, and so he wants to be alone and do things for himself. The idea that, in the end, he must give his life to save someone else… I thought that was really powerful.”

Despite Wolverine’s death, it is of course entirely possible that he could return for future movies: Logan is set in the year 2029, whereas the next instalment of the main series is expected to take place in the early 90s (or they could just go down the usual Fox route of ignoring continuity completely). However, Jackman remains adamant that his time is up:

“I know this doesn’t sound right coming from an Australian, but at some point, you’ve got to leave the party. It’s time to go home.”

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Logan reunites Hugh Jackman with The Wolverine director James Mangold and also stars Hugh Jackman, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen, Eriq La Salle, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Elise Neal.
