Kong: Skull Island tracking $135 million global opening

March 8, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures unleashes the Eighth Wonder of the World this week as Kong: Skull Island rolls out in 65 markets, and Deadline is reporting that the second instalment of the MonsterVerse shared universe is tracking a global opening of between $110 and $135 million.

Domestically, projections for Skull Island place in the the $45 to $50 million range, and it’s thought that the film could miss out on top spot at the box office, with 20th Century Fox’s Logan expected to finish the weekend with around $48 million. The $185 million-budgeted monster movie will also face some stiff competition the following week as Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast hits cinemas.

Kong: Skull Island is the second chapter of Legendary and Warner Bros.’ MonsterVerse, following 2014’s Godzilla. It will be followed in 2018 by Godzilla: King of Monsters, leading to a showdown between the two characters in 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong.

When a scientific expedition to an uncharted island awakens titanic forces of nature, a mission of discovery becomes an explosive war between monster and man. Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman and John C. Reilly star in a thrilling and original new adventure that reveals the untold story of how Kong became King.

Kong: Skull Island sees Jordan Vogt-Roberts directing a cast that includes Tom Hiddleston (High-Rise), Brie Larson (Room), John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane), John C. Reilly (The Lobster), Thomas Mann (Me and Girl and the Dying Girl), Corey Hawkins (The Walking Dead), Toby Kebbell (Fantastic Four), Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton), Samuel L. Jackson (Avengers: Age of Ultron), John Ortiz (Silver Linings Playbook) and Shea Whigham (Cop Car).
