Darth Vader was originally going to kill Darth Maul in Star Wars Rebels’ season 2 finale

March 18, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Darth Maul is heading to Tatooine in tonight’s episode of Star Wars Rebels as he seeks his revenge against Obi-Wan Kenobi in ‘Twin Suns’ [watch a clip from the episode here], but it seems that the Phantom Menace villain would not have made it to the third season had Rebels creator Dave Filoni stuck to his original plan for the season two finale.

“So originally in that episode you were gonna get Vader fighting Maul, Vader would have killed Maul, and then fought Ahsoka,” Filoni told Gizmondo. “It just became unwieldy. There were too many storylines, and there isn’t enough emotional material between Vader and Maul. It’s more of a fan fiction fun thought that they fought. The emotional drama was really between Vader and Ahsoka. So we decided to let Maul live.”

Of course, it remains to be seen whether Maul survives his encounter with Old Ben… we’ll find out when ‘Twin Suns’ airs tonight.
