Kong coming to television with King Kong Skull Island

April 20, 2017 by Ricky Church

Its only been a month since the release of Kong: Skull Island, but already the king of the apes has a new project in the works, but not one you’d expect. King Kong will be heading to television for King Kong Skull Island. Not to be confused with the film, the series will be a separate entity and a serialized and contemporary continuation of the classic 1933 film with a female lead and a multicultural cast.

This will be the first time King Kong has come to television. MarVista Entertainment and IM Global are teaming up to produce the series from a script by The Bye Bye Man‘s Jonathan Penner and Stacey Title, who will also executive produce. It will be based on writer/artist Joe DeVito’s Skull Island property through DeVito Artworks and Merian C. Cooper’s King Kong, and will delve into the origins and mysteries of the dangerous island.

“Jonathan and Stacy have taken a world that has enraptured audiences in all its many forms over the years and given it a contemporary, female-focused spin,” said MarVista CEO Fernando Szew. “It is with great anticipation that we partner with IM Global Television to bring this exciting new vision directly into viewers’ homes.”

“There’s clearly a deep and abiding interest in this timeless story. We love Stacy and Jonathan’s approach to this adaptation and look forward to partnering with MarVista as we bring this gripping tale of survival and adventure to life for a new generation of Kong fans,” said IM Global Television president Mark Stern.

“It’s been a privilege to work with Joe DeVito and his truly unique, never-before-seen Kong universe,” said Dannie Festa, another executive producer through World Builder Entertainment. “We feel confident that it will be hugely appealing to fans all over the world.”
