Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed such films as Saw II, Saw II, Saw IV, 11-11-11, and The Barrens has set his sights on his next film: an indie sci-fi action flick called Apex.
Described as a mix of Predator and Call of Duty, the film tells the story of a Special Ops team sent to optain a weapon of mass destruction from North Korea. The team is then transported to another world, and must fight for survival against a dangerous alien race.
Written by newcomer James E. Cavanaugh, Apex is taking shape at 2511 Productions in association with Ambiance Pictures. Joe Di Maio (Kid Cannibis, The Last Call) will produce along with Aaron Ray (V/H/S, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt).
Bousman calls Apex “a love letter to the sci-fi films I grew up watching with my dad, such as Alien, Predator, Enemy Mine, Tremors. But I also want it to have the more modern feel of some of the recent video games I am currently playing, like Halo and Call of Duty.” He wants to meld 1980s movie-style action with the reality of such war films as Lone Survivor, and says, “This can be a balls-to-the-walls action fantasy and it’s franchisable outside of the movie universe. There is a whole world to explore in Apex.”
Hollywood could certainly use some more original ideas, so I’m willing to give Bousman and Apex a try. The producers are looking to make the film a transmedia property, and hope to bring key art and alien designs to this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
