20th Century Fox unleashed Ridley Scott’s latest sci-fi horror Alien: Covenant in 34 international markets this past weekend ahead of its U.S. debut this coming Friday, with the film grossing $42 million across the Friday to Sunday period.
The Prometheus sequel took top spot in 19 markets, but placed second overall at the international box office behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (which added $52.2 million internationally). South Korea led the pack with $7.2 million in receipts, followed by the UK on $6.4 million.
Scott’s last Alien offering Prometheus went on to gross $403 million globally when it was released in 2012, and Fox will be hoping for a similar return with Covenant, seeing as a sequel is already slated to start shooting next year.

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS — and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction.
