Joseph Fiennes almost played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy

May 25, 2017 by Robert Kojder

During a recent interview with The Wrap, Joseph Fiennes discussed how he was originally very close to securing the coveted role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy.

“I auditioned for a great director,” said Fiennes. “It was whittled down after many auditions to myself and another fine actor who I was at that time at drama school with. [At the final audition, I met] a lovely, delightful child. Must’ve been around age five — and he introduced me, ‘this is Joe and he’s quite possibly Obi-Wan Kenobi.’ His daughter turned around and said ‘I don’t like this guy. He’s weird. I don’t like him.’ And that’s how my audition went.”

While there is probably more to the story than this little piece of humorous reasoning, it is nonetheless interesting. As most people probably know, Ewan McGregor ended up getting the role and could possibly return it if Disney and Lucasfilm decide to go ahead with the long-rumoured Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff film.
