There will be only one Game of Thrones spin off says HBO president

June 7, 2017 by Samuel Brace

The programming president of HBO has revealed that there will in fact only be one spin off show for the popular fantasy series Game of Thrones.

When the announcement was made that four Game of Thrones spin-offs were in development many assumed that to mean that all four would make it to television.

That was always going to be a little overboard however, and now HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys has confirmed that by the time it gets to air there will just be one prequel show.

“In the press at large, everybody said, ‘there are four spinoffs’ and they assume that means each one is happening and we’re going to have a new Game of Thrones show per quarter. That’s not what’s going on.” Bloys told EW.

“The idea is not to do four shows. The bar set by [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] is so high that my hope is to get one show that lives up to it,” he continued. “We have some amazing writers who want to take a shot at this. They’re also looking at different times in the universe and all will have different feels. This increases our odds of finding one that’s unique.”

This certainly sounds like a smart approach to the process, gathering talented folks to work on independent projects and choose the very best to bring to fans.

Game of Thrones has been such a hit with both critics and audiences that the last thing HBO or anyone will want is for a diluted successor series. Here’s hoping at least one of the projects can achieve success.
