Michael Bay reiterates that he won’t be returning to direct Transformers 6

June 17, 2017 by Amie Cranswick

With Transformers: The Last Knight set to open this coming week, director Michael Bay has once again reiterated that he won’t be returning for the sixth instalment of the series, which has already been given a 2019 release date by Hasbro and Paramount Pictures.

“These movies that I’ve done, they are massive movies,” Bay told Fandango. “They take a lot out of you. I’ve done it enough, and I’ve had a great time doing it. I’m going out with a bang on this one, and I feel like you gotta go out while you’re ahead, you know. I think I’ve had a good run, and I’ve got a lot of other movies I want to do.”

Bay had previously said that he was finished with the franchise after the release of Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Transformers: Age of Extinction, having a change of heart on both occasions. However, it seems he may have made his mind up this time, and is actively seeking his next project:

“I just read a very bloody hit man movie that was a page turner. That seems like a fun one to do. I love doing 13 Hours, I love doing Pain & Gain — I think it’ll be something more serious and more adult, I guess.”

So, it looks like we will be getting a new director for Transformers 6, although they won’t be the first filmmaker post-Bay to tackle the Transformers universe, with Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) set to helm next year’s Bumblebee spinoff movie.

The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock). There comes a moment in everyone’s life when we are called upon to make a difference. In Transformers: The Last Knight, the hunted will become heroes. Heroes will become villains. Only one world will survive; theirs, or ours.

Transformers: The Last Knight reunites Michael Bay with franchise veterans Mark Wahlberg, Josh Duhamel, Stanley Tucci, John Turturro, John Goodman and Peter Cullen, while new additions to the cast include Isabela Moner (100 Things to Do Before High School), Jerrod Carmichael (Bad Neighbours), Laura Haddock (Guardians of the Galaxy), Santiago Cabrera (Merlin), Liam Garrigan (Once Upon a Time), Mitch Pileggi (The X-Files) and Anthony Hopkins (Thor: The Dark World). The film hits theaters on June 21st, 2017.
