David O. Russell is in talks for adaptation of Boy21

July 20, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Director David O. Russell is in talks to produce an adaptation of Basketball drama Boy21.

The man behind American Hustle and The Fighter, is currently in talks to produce Boy21, a film version of Matthew Quick’s basketball novel.

Swift has already seen one of his novels adapted by O. Russell, he directed The Silver Linings Playbook starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. The film picked up eight Oscar nominations.

Boy21, published by Little, Brown and Co., tells the story of two high school seniors in a rough town that is ruled by the Irish mob. One looks after his disabled grandfather, finding some respite when playing basketball, and the other is a former basketball prodigy whose life is upended by a tragedy.

John Whittington is currently onboard as a screenwriter for the project but no director or actors are as yet signed onto the film.

John Malkovich’s Mr. Mudd, and Channing Tatum’s Free Association, are the production companies behind the movie.
