Ivan Reitman planning new animated and live-action Ghostbusters movies

July 21, 2017 by Gary Collinson

While last year’s Paul Feig-directed Ghostbusters: Answer the Call didn’t quite prove to be the relaunch that fans of the franchise were hoping for, it seems that Ivan Reitman isn’t ready to call time on the series, with the director of the original two movies revealing at San Diego Comic-Con that he’s got plans for both an animated feature and new live-action film.

Speaking about IDW’s Ghostbusters 101 panel, Reitman said that: “I think we have wonderful plans, [including] an animated feature that we’re deep in design on already… a really great story. That’s going to surprise everybody, I think, when it comes out. And we’re dealing with Ghost World quite a lot. We’re looking at the film from a ghost point-of-view, and the Ghostbusters from a ghost point-of-view. I think that would be something very interesting.”

Reitman also revealed that the Ghostbusters 101 comic book series – which teams the original Ghostbusters with the new characters from Answer the Call – could potentially serve as inspiration for a new live-action movie: “It was clear a lot of people weren’t happy the original Ghostbusters world wasn’t included in the new one,” said Reitman. “I love seeing [writer Erik Burnham’s take on] Kate McKinnon’s character’s interactions with Spengler [in the Ghostbusters 101 comic books]. It’s very rich, and has given me lots of ideas for a new film.”

As for when we might see another Ghostbusters, Reitman highlighted that 2019 will mark the 35th anniversary of the franchise, and that “the studio is going to try to tie one of the new films close to that date.”

Are you excited about the prospect of another Ghostbusters movie? Would a crossover work without Harold Ramis? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
