Netflix sends funny cease and desist to Stranger Things themed bar

September 19, 2017 by Samuel Brace

A Stranger Things themed pop-up bar received a cease and desist order from Netflix, but with a little humour mixed in.

The hit 80s set sci-fi show Stranger Things has clearly touched a nerve with the culture at large and its influence has now been seen in a pop-up bar in Chicago.

The bar ended its six week run and Netflix has now kindly asked its creators to close the whole thing down for good, but did so while keeping in line with the Stranger Things brand.

“Danny and Doug,

“My walkie talkie is busted so I had to write this note instead. I heard you launched a Stranger Things pop-up bar at your Logan Square location. Look, I don’t want you to think I’m a total wastoid, and I love how much you guys love the show. (Just wait until you see Season 2!) But unless I’m living in the Upside Down, I don’t think we did a deal with you for this pop-up. You’re obviously creative types, so I’m sure you can appreciate that it’s important to us to have a say in how our fans encounter the worlds we build.

“We’re not going to go full Dr. Brenner on you, but we ask that you please (1) not extend the pop-up beyond its 6 week run ending in September, and (2) reach out to us for permission if you plan to do something like this again. Let me know as soon as possible that you agree to these requests.

“We love our fans more than anything, but you should know the Demogorgon is not always as forgiving. So please don’t make us call your mom.”

Well, if cease and desists have to be given, and of course they sometimes do, this is the way to do it. Hopefully the bar’s creators appreciated the effort on behalf of Netflix to bring a little levity to proceedings.

It’s 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Indiana are still reeling from the horrors of the demogorgon and the secrets of Hawkins Lab. Will Byers has been rescued from the Upside Down but a bigger, sinister entity still threatens those who survived.

The second season of Stranger Things sees the return of cast members Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobbie Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Charlie Heaton, Natalia Dyer and Joe Keery, along with new additions Sean Astin (The Goonies), Paul Reiser (Aliens), Linnea Berthelsen (The Desert), Sadie Sink (Odyssey), Dacre Montgomery (Power Rangers) and Brett Gelman (Brett Gelman’s Dinner in America). It will hit Netflix on October 27th.
