The final season of Game of Thrones costing $15 million per episode

October 1, 2017 by Gary Collinson

In an article over at Variety exploring the rising costs of prestige television, the outlet is reporting that HBO is going all in on the upcoming eighth and final season of the epic fantasy series with a budget of $15 million per episode.

This figure makes it the most expensive show around, putting it ahead of The Get Down ($11 million per episode), The Crown ($10 million), Westworld ($10 million), American Gods ($8 million), Stranger Things ($8 million) and Jack Ryan ($8 million).

Given that the final season of Game of Thrones is expected to consist of six feature-length episodes, and will presumably require a heavy emphasis on visual effects as the War for the Dawn plays out, this figure perhaps isn’t too surprising.

However, given the enormous success of the series, it’s also sure to be a pretty safe bet for HBO as it prepares to expand the universe with the launch of up to five spinoff shows set in the world of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire.
