Blade Runner 2049 targeting a $50 million opening weekend

October 5, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Blade Runner 2049 is aiming for a U.S. domestic haul of $50 million in its opening weekend.

There was always going to be a fair amount of participation for the sequel to one of the most acclaimed sci-fi films of all time, and that anticipation was only heightened by the rave reviews that Blade Runner 2049 has received, with some even comparing it favourably to the original [like ours, which you can read here].

This looks to be translating into some pretty healthy box office numbers for the Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford led movie, with the film set to accumulate between $45 and $50 million at the box office this weekend.

It should be noted that Blade Runner 2049 cost a whopping $150 million to make, but investors won’t be panicking just yet as the film is looking to replicate the performance of Mad Max: Fury Road, which debuted to $45 million and grossed a sizeable $378 million worldwide.

Blade Runner 2049 is also a film that should perform well overseas, particularly in markets such as China, Japan, and South Korea.

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

Blade Runner 2049 is set for release on October 6th and sees Harrison Ford reprising the role of Rick Deckard alongside Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, Dave Bautista, Jared Leto and Edward James Olmos.
