Idris Elba still wants to make a Dark Tower sequel

October 27, 2017 by Amie Cranswick

The future of Sony and MRC’s planned Dark Tower franchise seems to be up in the air at the moment following the box office failure of this year’s Stephen King adaptation.

A potential TV series remains in development – which according to King will be a reboot – but in an interview with The Radio Times, actor Idris Elba has revealed that he’s hoping for a second big screen outing as the Gunslinger:

“I think any TV series that is an offshoot from the film can have more time to explore some themes. I’d personally prefer to do another Dark Tower film, exploring some more of the gunslinger – as a film. I don’t know much about where they are with the TV show – but I think there’s definitely talks to try and do another one.”

Given that The Dark Tower managed to gross just $111.8 million worldwide following its release in August, a second movie does look highly unlikely at this point. However, despite King’s comments about it starting afresh, it has been said previously that the producers of the Wizard and Glass TV series are hoping to have Elba on board, so perhaps we haven’t seen the last of his Roland Deschain…

There are other worlds than these. Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, the ambitious and expansive story from one of the world’s most celebrated authors, makes its launch to the big screen. The last Knight Warrior, Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim, also known as the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.

The Dark Tower sees Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) directing a cast that includes Idris Elba (Luther) as Roland Deschain, Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar) as the Man in Black, Tom Taylor (Doctor Foster) as Jake Chambers, Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road) as Tirana, Fran Kranz (The Cabin in the Woods) as Pimli, Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) as Richard Sayre, Michael Barbieri (Little Men) as Timmy, Claudia Kim (Avengers: Age of Ultron) as Arra Champignon and Katheryn Winnick (Vikings) as Laurie Chambers.
