Justice League costume designer on why the Batsuit was changed

November 27, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Originally published November 27, 2017. Updated December 18, 2019.

One of the best parts of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was Batman himself. Ben Affleck proved to be worthy of the cowl, sporting an incredible looking Batsuit. That suit was the most comic-accurate Batman suit to ever grace the big screen, wWhich is why it came as a surprise that Batman gets quite a big suit upgrade in Justice League. Talking to Fashionista, Justice League costume designer Michael Wilkinson explains the reasoning behind the change:

“We wanted to honor the idea of a gray Batsuit as opposed to a black Batsuit. Batman in the graphic novels is usually drawn with a gray suit with a black cape as opposed to all in black. Also, Zack loved the idea that Batman’s forearms would have this extra metallic plating strapped to it to collect hits and bullets and any kind of incoming.”

It’s good to see that Snyder, and Wilkinson are thinking practically when making changes to the character’s outfit. It’s also reassuring that they are trying to please fans with the new look. However, along with these changes, came some noticeable bulk. While Batman v. Superman’s suit wasn’t exactly slim, Justice League’s Batsuit almost seemed to give Affleck trouble walking at times; to the point where it was hard to picture him doing any fighting at all.

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League reunites Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta and Robin Wright as General Antiope alongside J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard (The Danish Girl) as Mera and Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones) as Steppenwolf.
