Andrew Garfield wants Spider-Man to swing the other way

July 11, 2013 by admin

Yesterday Entertainment Weekly gave us our first official look at Jamie Foxx’s (Django Unchained) villain Electro from Sony’s upcoming sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on the cover of the Comic-Con preview issue, and inside the magazine Andrew Garfield has offered up some interesting – and no doubt tongue-in-cheek – quotes which might go some way to explaining director Marc Webb’s decision to cut Shailene Woodley’s (The Descendants) scenes as Mary Jane Watson.

“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” states Garfield, referring to a conversation he had with producer Matt Tolmach. “And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality?  It’s hardly even groundbreaking!… So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”

And Garfield even has an actor in mind for the male MJ in Chronicle star Michael B. Jordan, who has been strongly tipped for another comic book movie role – that of the Human Torch in Josh Trank’s forthcoming reboot The Fantastic Four: “I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better—we’d have interracial bisexuality!”

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for release on April 18th, 2014 in the UK and May 2nd, 2014 in North America, with Emma Stone and Sally Field reprising their roles from last year’s reboot alongside franchise newcomers Dane DeHann (Chronicle), Paul Giamatti (Sideways), Chris Cooper (American Beauty), Felicity Jones (Like Crazy), and Colm Feore (Thor).
