Simon Kinberg talks X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Jean Grey’s transformation

December 8, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Following hot on the heels of yesterday’s first look images [which we have for you here], long time X-Men writer-producer and debut director Simon Kinberg has been talking to Entertainment Weekly about next year’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and more specifically Jean Grey’s transformation into the Phoenix.

“Jean absorbs those solar flares and then hurls them back out into space,” said Kinberg. “That’s what triggers, awakens, creates this Phoenix force and voice inside her. What appears to the world to be another heroic victory by the X-Men in saving stranded people in space we realize is the the thing that begins the unraveling of Jean and the unraveling of secrets Charles told her.”

So, while we’re getting to see the X-Men in space, it seems that – as with Kinberg’s first attempt at The Dark Phoenix Saga, X-Men: The Last Stand – the Phoenix will be part of Jean Grey, rather than the cosmic entity of the comic books. Are you happy about that? Or does it not really make a difference in the scheme of things? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

After the X-Men team is dispatched to space for a rescue mission, a solar flare hits the X-Jet and the surge of energy ignites a malevolent, power-hungry new force within Jean – the Phoenix.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set for release on November 2nd, 2018. Simon Kinberg is directing a cast that includes franchise veterans Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor X), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) and Evan Peters (Quicksilver) alongside new additions Jessica Chastain and Lamar Johnson.
