The Flickering Myth Reaction to the Death Stranding trailer

December 10, 2017 by Villordsutch

The Flickering Myth writing team reacts to the Death Stranding trailer…

Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming game Death Stranding stars both Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) and Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal).  Published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, this upcoming PS4 exclusive title will be Kojima’s first game since he left his longtime home at Konami and formed his own software development studio Kojima Productions.  This latest trailer was revealed at this year’s Games Awards and already the people of YouTube are combing through every frame for hidden clues, clues that may reveal a glimpse of the story for this ever so secret game.  Read on to find out what our writing team made of this latest trailer…

Rob James Kojder: Since some journalists consider #TwinPeaksTheReturn a movie in year-end lists I can’t wait to put @HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN and @RealGDT #DeathStranding in mine whatever year it releases.

Scott Watson: What on earth did I just watch. Perhaps I’m not intelligent enough to get what exactly Kojimi is doing or looking to achieve, but there’s nothing here that shouts this is what this game is about. It’s a cut scene (granted a very impressive one) from a game we’ve yet to see any gameplay for. I don’t understand people losing their collective minds when nothing of the game itself has yet to be seen. Until I see any gameplay this is all icing and sprinkles without any cake.

Shaun Munro: This looks like Kojima at his most fiercely unrestrained. I just hope the gameplay loop is something unconventional rather than just another third-person action adventure game. Either way, it looks insanely ambitious. I pessimistically won’t expect to play it until 2020, though.

Anghus Houvouras: I need this crazy ass mind fuck in my life as soon as humanly possible.

Ray Willmott: So, apparently, Norman Reedus eats babies now? The Zombie Apocalypse clearly changes people.  Still not sure what to make of all this but it is distinctly Kojima and being a Metal Gear fan certainly makes me intrigued.

Tom Roach: I would need to analyse each of the trailers in great depth to gain any understanding of what this game is really going to be about. At this time I have no idea what to expect from this game. I think it looks cool and I will always get behind anything that Hideo Kojima is involved in. The fact that he has full creative control on this project is exciting. When artists are given true creative freedom they can really create great things.

Villordsutch: Well it’s got me, but I don’t know what I’m getting.  It’s a excellent looking slice of Science Fiction that I’d pay hard cash to see, but at the same I’m uneasy, uneasy with an itch that’s whispering worries.  Is this game going for style over substance, are we being distracted by great ‘cutscenes’ and come the release (in a couple of years) will the final game be utterly different.  I hope not, still until then both Kojima and del Toro can bring me more horror-filled Sci-Fi that makes me mumble, “What the ruddy flip!?” as I grin like a Cheshire Cat.

It was never going to smooth sailing with a Hideo Kojima trailer and the Flickering Myth staff have reflected that with their feedback.  What did you think about this latest Death Stranding trailer, let us know in the comments below?
