Is Warner Bros. planning a Legion of Super-Heroes movie?

September 9, 2014 by James Garcia

According to Latino Review’s El Mayimbe, Warner Bros. is looking to cash in on the success of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (which is at the cusp of making $300 million in the US and has already passed Man of Steel‘s domestic total) by developing their own foray into the cosmic side of comics, The Legion of Super-Heroes.

“According to sources, Warners is quietly sending out the DC comic book Legion Of Superheroes to screenwriters & their reps for takes. For non-industry folks, what that means is that screenwriters check out the comic book and come up for a movie idea involving the characters from that comic. Those writers then go to the studio to pitch their idea. The studio then hires the screenwriter they feel has the best idea or take for the film.”

The project is supposedly under “strong consideration” at the studio, though it’s unclear whether or not it’s one of the 9 untitled DC films slated for release between 2016 and 2020.

The Legion of Super-Heroes are a futuristic superhero team from the 30th and 31st centuries. Their founding members are Cosmic Boy (Rokk Krinn, who has the power to manipulate and move metal), Saturn Girl (Imra Ardeen, a telepath), and Lightning Lad (Garth Ranzz, who can generate and shoot electricity). The team has gone through a handful of reboots and re-imaginings since their debut in 1958, are known to travel through time, and have teamed up with Superman in both the past, present, and future.

El Mayimbe states that despite the inevitability of a “debunk attempt,” he trusts his source on this one.

What do you think; could we see a Legion of Super-Heroes movie? Or are we too early into the new DC Cinematic Universe for a cosmic team like this? Sound off in the comments…
