The New Mutants “is probably the hardest PG-13 ever made”, according to Josh Boone

January 24, 2018 by Jordan Jones

Watching the first trailer for The New Mutants some months back, you wouldn’t be foolish to think that you were watching a trailer for an upcoming horror film. While the movie only has a PG-13 rating, it’s clear that this upcoming installment in the X-Men series will be pushing the boundaries of the comic book genre in ways that we haven’t seen before.

Also, don’t let that PG-13 rating fool you: Director Josh Boone is set on stretching that rating as far as it will go. Sitting down for an interview with Empire Magazine, the New Mutants director expressed his desire to make you cry: “This movie is probably the hardest PG-13 ever made. I mean, we’ve pushed it. The horror is pretty dark, but there’s also an emotional core, too. If I can scare you and make you cry: that’s the goal.”

With a great cast, and a dynamite first trailer, let’s hope that The New Mutants turns out as interesting as early footage suggests. With Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen looking to be a straight-up horror flick, as well as the upcoming Spawn reboot, we may have an entirely new genre of comic book films on our hands. We’ll have a while to wait until we find out however, as the film has recently been pushed back to 2019.

X-Men: The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), and features a cast includes Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga (Queen of the South) as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. It is set for release on February 22nd, 2019.
