Deadline is reporting that Netflix has won a heated bidding war for the rights to Life Sentence, a short story by Matthew Baker, fending off competition from Amazon, Apple, Warner Bros., Universal, Fox 2000, New Regency, Gaumont and MWM Studios.
The short revolves around “a futuristic program where the memories of criminals are erased, instead of sending them to prison. The story focuses on one such man, who finds himself trying to reconcile his past actions and relationships.”
According to the site, the streaming service has set War for the Planet of the Apes helmer Matt Reeves to produce a movie adaptation through his 6th & Idaho production banner. It is the third short story sold by Baker to Hollywood after Transition, which is in development at Amazon, and The Appearance, which was picked up by Makeready.
Reeves is currently developing the DC Extended Universe featire The Batman for Warner Bros., with the solo superhero movie expected to be his next directorial effort.
