Universal developing a Timecop reboot

May 23, 2013 by admin

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Universal Pictures are planning a reboot of Timecop, the 1994 sci-fi actioner directed by Peter Hyams (Sudden Death, End of Days), which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as a U.S. federal agent in a then-future 2004 who fights time-travel crime as part of the Time Enforcement Commission.

Timecop was originally based upon the Dark Horse Comics story Time Cop by writer Mike Verheiden and artists Phil Hester and Chris Warner, and proved to be one of Van Damme’s biggest successes, banking over $103 million from a budget of just $27 million. It spawned a short-lived TV series of the same name, which aired on ABC in 1997, as well as the direct-to-video sequel Timecop 2: The Berlin Decision starring Jason Scott Lee.

Originally announced back in 2010, this latest version of Timecop is described as “a reboot and reimagining of the concept” and is to be produced by Marc Shmuger (We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks). As yet, there’s now word on a potential director, casting or release date.
