Jaimie Alexander talks Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. guest appearance and Marvel’s strong female characters

March 11, 2014 by admin

Asgard’s Lady Sif will pay a visit to Midgard tonight as Thor and Thor: The Dark World star Jaimie Alexander reprises her role for a guest appearance in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the actress has been speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the episode ‘Yes Men’, which sees Sif arriving on Earth in search of her Asgardian nemesis Lorelei, played by Elena Satine (Smallville).

“I love playing Lady Sif, and just to be able to get to explore her even further was just such a treat for me. You definitely see a lot more of her and how she interacts with other people [in the episode]. Essentially, she comes to earth hunting Lorelei. She’s been sent on a mission to bring Lorelei back to Asgard. And so with that, she’s in someone else’s world, on their turf, and she enlists the help of S.H.I.E.L.D. out of respect. I think she’s definitely a one-woman army when it comes to doing things, but she’s also respectful of other territory and she knows she can trust S.H.I.E.L.D. because Thor [Chris Hemsworth] did. And that speaks very highly to her. So the crossover in general is such a great thing. It’s been awhile since she’s been on earth. That awkwardness is still there!”

Meanwhile, Alexander then went on to discuss Marvel’s reputation for showcasing strong female characters, which has been particularly evident in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: “I think Marvel does a great job. And I’ve said this so many times, but they do such a great job at writing female characters. In my past experience with Marvel, it’s always been more about the personality and soul of the character, and the physicality is secondary. And I think that’s huge, you know? They’re so complex, and parts of them are damaged, and parts of them are soulful, and I’ve seen it in every single Marvel character. There’s always a vulnerability, there’s a strongness; they’re feminine but they’re tough at the same time. They’re mostly the kind of women we want our children to grow up to be. And I think that’s so important. Just also working with a lot of the females that are on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., each one of their characters — they’re smart, they’re compassionate, and again, it’s less about what they look like and more about what they are. And I think that’s awesome to see that it’s just been consistent in the Marvel universe.”

Be sure to visit EW to read the full interview, where Alexander discusses her character’s interactions with Coulson (Clark Gregg), Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) and FitzSimmons (Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge).
