Simon Pegg admits J.J. Abrams had different plans for Rey’s parents

April 5, 2018 by Jordan Jones

This may come as a shocker, but Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been a bit polarizing. There are a fair amount of people that…  well, let’s say that they didn’t prefer it. If one looks for just 30 seconds on the internet they will be treated to a wealth of detailed, and extremely polite critiques levelled at Rian Johnson’s effort.

One of the chief critiques? The handling of Rey’s parents, which is thought by many to be a complete misfire following the intriguing plot thread left in J.J. Abram’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The idea of Rey’s parents had been a hotly debated topic right up until the release of The Last Jedi, where we learn that Rey’s parents were nobodies. Well, according to actor Simon Pegg, Abrams had different plans.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Simon Pegg — who played the handsome Unkar Plutt in The Force Awakens — reveals that Abrams was planning on making Rey’s parentage more significant:

“Well I know what J.J. kind of intended, or at least what was sort of being chucked around. I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by [The Last Jedi]. I don’t know. I don’t know (laughs). I think Unkar Plutt is Rey’s real father… There was some talk about, you know, a kind of relevant lineage for her. But I honestly don’t know, and I don’t know if anybody knows. We shall see.”

So, perhaps Abrams would have made her parents a bigger deal? Pegg doesn’t quite know for sure, clearly. We don’t know either. No one knows. However, given that Abrams will be closing out the trilogy with Star Wars Episode IX, perhaps we will learn of his initial plans. Who knows?

Star Wars: Episode IX is set to go into production in July ahead of a release on December 20th 2019.
