Flickering Myth Reaction – Daredevil reveal at NYCC

October 13, 2014 by Luke Owen

The Flickering Myth staff react to the Daredevil reveal at the New York Comic Con…

Over the weekend at the New York Comi-Con, Marvel and Netflix held a panel for their upcoming Daredevil show and gave us our first look at Charlie Cox as The Man Without Fear. You can read a recap of the footage shown here.

But what did the Flickering Myth writing and editorial staff think of our first look for Daredevil?

Ben Rayner: …looks like the Deadpool: Pulp costume to me. Not sure if I like it or not. He must have been blind when he made it…

Luke Owen: Who would have thought that they’d go down The Trail of The Incredible Hulk route? I like this as a starting point. It fits their “dark and grittty” mood, even if it does raise questions about what mask they’ll do for Iron Fist (it’s more or less the same). But as a lifelong fan of the character, I hope they go to the traditional suit at some point.

Kris Wall: I can take it or leave it, the show certainly has a great cast but I’m not much of a fan of the character, you can probably blame Ben Affleck for that. I was far more excited by the Powers trailer debut from NYCC.

Gav Logan: I like it. It adds a bit more realism to it straight away. I’m sure it won’t be long before some sort of version of the suit comes into play

Scott J Davis: It looks quite good. Like the darker early costume, that’s a nice touch, but let’s be honest (and we are all thinking it) there is no way they can make anything worse than Mark Steven Johnson’s “classic”…

Kris Wall: Wait, are we not regarding Ben Affleck’s Daredevil as a classic?

Chris Cooper: I think that film gets a hard time. But my God Bullseye was terrible.

I like what we’re seeing so far. It’s obviously part of an evolution. Hopefully it’s not too dark and has some of the levity found in Mark Waid’s books.

Luke Owen: The Daredevil movie is bad, real bad. It’s not just the acting or direction, the movie has no plot. People often say the director’s cut is better and do you know why? That version at least had a story. The theatrical cut is just random scenes that eventually lead to a terrible CGI’d fight in a church.

Helen Murdoch: Quite liking the darker costume and am intrigued with what they’re going to do to wash away the memories of Affleck’s Daredevil. Think of how awful the Buffy the Vampire Slayer film was compared to the show. There’s still hope!

Kris Wall: I should really stop telling people that without Daredevil and Batman & Robin there would be no Marvel Universe or Dark Knight Trilogy, might be why I’m getting funny looks.

Luke Owen: Bloody true though.

Scott J Davis: Amen to that.

James Garcia: I like it a lot, as a starting point. It’s clearly an adaptation of the suit we saw in Frank Miller’s Man Without Fear, which was a great book. It reminds me a lot of the suit Bruce Wayne wore for his first night out on patrol in Batman Begins. As others have said here, it adds some nice realism, which greatly benefits a character like Daredevil.

Overall, I’m extremely happy with what I’ve heard and seen from the series so far. I really hope it makes up for the disappointment Marvel has given us on the TV front so far.

So, mostly positive thoughts on Daredevil’s look. What did you guys think?
