Shawn Levy to direct Minecraft movie

October 17, 2014 by Thomas Roach

It was announced a few months ago that Warner Bros. had acquired the rights to the video game Minecraft and are planning to create a movie adaptation. Well, that movie has now landed a director in Shawn Levy, known for directing the Night at the Museum series, The Internship, Real Steel and most recently This Is Where I Leave You.

Minecraft has sold 54 million copies across multiple platforms and has a huge following. The game allows players to be creative, constructing the world that is randomly generated out of blocks. The game also allows players to explore these worlds, gather resources, craft items and fight enemies.

Roy Lee and Jill Sobel Messick are producing the movie, but there is currently no screenwriter attached to the project or start date for production. It is rather hard to imagine how a Minecraft movie would work but clearly their is a vision that the studio has.

As it stands Minecraft has no release date and may not hit cinemas as late as 2018.

Do you think a Minecraft movie will work? Let us know…
