Comic Book Review – Age of Ultron #5

April 26, 2013 by admin

Robb Ghag reviews Age of Ultron #5 (spoilers ahead)…

“The super hero survivors of the Ultron devastation follow a trail to the Savage Land in the hopes of finding a way to survive or turn the tide of the Ultron apocalypse.”

Issue #5 jumps back to just months prior to the Age of Ultron. Dr. Henry Pym and Reed Richards as well as Tony Stark examine The Vision as he has been deactivated, damaged beyond repair. As Tony Stark recalls, The Vision miraculously resurrects himself, and it is only in hindsight that Tony realizes The Vision was sent from the future by Ultron in order to maintain control in the past. I have to admit Hitch’s artwork has taken a “dip” in form from the “Ultimates” as well as previous issues.

The group of heroes travel the Savage Land to one of Nick Fury’s bunkers, and attempt to break in. The Red Hulk, using rage and strength, eventually opens the door, only to be welcomed by multiple laser blasts. There’s already someone in the bunker – none other than Nick Fury himself. Elsewhere around the world in major metropolitan cities the army of Ultrons are decimating and annihilating all living beings without mercy or survivors.

Back in Nick Fury’s bunker, he explains to the heroes his battle plan in order to end the Age of Ultron. Confirming what the group already knows, Ultron is in the future controlling the past. Several options are formulated including Wolverine’s suggestion to go back to the past and kill Henry Pym, Ultron’s creator. Nick Fury comes up with another suggestion, as he reveals his “weapons room” – he has possession of Dr.Doom’s Time Platform. The plan: A group of heroes will head to the future in order to stop Ultron. It’s a great reveal as Fury has an arsenal of some of the best weapons ever seen in the Marvel universe: Magneto and Nova’s helmet, Iron Man’s Mark II armour, Hawkeye’s bow, Spider-Man’s web shooters, and a ton more.

The group gets battle ready and heads to the future in order to execute their plan. Wolverine and a smaller group stay behind, and immediately after Nick Fury’s team leaves, Wolverine announces his plan – he is heading to the past in order to kill Henry Pym, before he creates Ultron.
