Nintendo reveals good profit news with Wii U sales doubling

November 3, 2014 by Tom Powter

Nintendo revealed a net profit for the July-September quarter to their investors on Wednesday. The six month period ending September has seen the company make $132 million, marking a significant improvement when you consider they lost $91 million in the first three months of said period.

Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS was partially responsible for the profit, with impressively strong sales of more than 3.2 million since its Japanese release in mid-September. Tomodachi Life has also been a surprise hit, managing to break the one million mark.

The Wii U is also doing well, having seen its hardware sales double in the last six months. During the six months to September period, Nintendo sold 1.1 million Wii Us – a marked improvement from 460,000 units in the same time period last year. Big games like Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors continue to sell ‘steadily’.

However, Nintendo’s handheld console, the 3DS, has seen a significant drop in sales, despite the release of Smash 3DS. Last year, between the April-September period, Nintendo sold 3.9 million units, but could only manage about 2 million during that period this year.
