Sean Bean set for lead in Frankenstein Chronicles

November 18, 2014 by Alfie Nobes

Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings star Sean Bean has found himself a leading role in the upcoming re-imagining of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.  The adaptation is set to span over six episodes taking the form a period crime drama.

The ITV original drama has already found its executive producers in Game of Thrones‘ Tracey Scoffield and Frank Doelger, whose credits also include Rome and John Adams as well as the HBO phenomenon.

The series has been created by director and writer Benjamin Ross alongside fellow writer Barry Langford. Variety reported that Ross, who will be sitting in the directors chair, had this to say about the upcoming series.

“Marlott’s investigation takes him into the dark corners of Regency London, he discovers an underworld of prostitution, drug smuggling, bodysnatching, and murder for profit. The rational evidence points first one-way and then another as he contemplates a frightening alternate scenario.”

Sean Bean and co. may face some stiff competition coming from Victor Frankenstein which will hit big screens in the same year as the ITV show. The film itself will star both James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe in leading roles.  However with the last Frankenstein blockbuster being an absolute flop, making just $8.3m from its opening weekend against a budget of $65m, ITV may not have too much to worry about.

The Rainmark produced series is set to begin shooting in Northern Ireland in January.
